For teachers, creators and SaaS teams weighing two ways to make an explainer.

AI Explainer vs Remotion (and Claude Code):Which Should You Use?

AI explainer vs Remotion is really two different jobs. Claude Code can write Remotion compositions: polished motion graphics built as React code. Explainimate turns a topic or script into a narrated, hand-drawn explainer — no Node setup, no timeline. This page compares the two paths honestly.

What Remotion + Claude Code actually is

Remotion is a framework for creating videos in React. You write (or generate) components, preview them in Remotion Studio, then render to MP4. Remotion's own docs cover prompting videos with coding agents and Agent Skills that teach Claude Code, Codex and similar tools how to build compositions the Remotion way.

A typical starter loop looks like this:

  • Create a blank Remotion project ("npx create-video" or similar).
  • Install Remotion agent skills.
  • Run the Studio preview and the coding agent in the project folder.
  • Prompt for timed scenes, typography, colours and motion.
  • Refine in Studio, then render.

Strengths

  • Full control: every frame is code you can version, reuse and automate.
  • Excellent for brand motion, kinetic typography, data-driven and personalized video at scale.
  • Claude Code lowers the floor for people who already live in a terminal and can read React when something breaks.

Trade-offs

  • You need a local (or CI) Node environment, a preview loop and comfort with debugging React/CSS.
  • Narration, voice sync and "pen draws while someone talks" are not the default product; you build or wire that yourself.
  • Commercial use beyond the free/creator rules needs a Company / Automators license when you render for end users or at volume. Remotion is open to look at, but not "unlimited free SaaS rendering."

Remotion is the right hammer when the video itself is the product surface — launch films, motion systems, parameterized renders.

What an AI explainer video maker is

An AI explainer video maker turns a topic or a pasted script into a short narrated video where the pictures and the voice arrive together. Explainimate specialises in hand-drawn explainers: chalkboard, whiteboard, product diagrams or stick figures. You do not open a timeline and you do not write React.

The loop is:

  • Describe the idea or paste a script (keep wording word-for-word if you need to).
  • Review a scene-by-scene script and picture plan — editing this step is free.
  • Press Draw: a pen sketches each scene while narration plays; tweak one object if needed; export MP4 in 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1.

Strengths

  • Built for teachers, course creators, faceless YouTube/Shorts and SaaS teams who need a clear explanation, not a motion-design system.
  • Script approval before you spend credits on drawing.
  • Drawn as editable vector objects (labels stay readable; one shape can move without regenerating the whole frame).
  • Narration in multiple languages without re-recording a studio session.

Trade-offs

  • You will not get Remotion-level custom easing, complex 3D or a shared design-system component library.
  • Style is "explained while drawn," not "After Effects in the browser."
  • Long, highly branded campaign films still belong in a motion pipeline (Remotion, After Effects, a studio).

When Remotion (with Claude Code) is the better choice

Choose Remotion when:

  • You already ship React, or a teammate does.
  • You need exact brand motion, repeated templates and CI renders.
  • The video must be driven by data (user name, plan tier, chart series).
  • You are building a video product or internal render pipeline, not a one-off lesson.

Claude Code makes Remotion faster to start. It does not remove the need to own the codebase when something looks wrong in Studio.

When an AI explainer video maker is the better choice

Choose an AI explainer when:

  • The goal is understanding: one idea, clear narration, pictures that appear as they are explained.
  • You (or your client) will not maintain a Remotion repo.
  • You want to read the script first, then pay for drawing — common for teachers and SaaS marketers.
  • You need 9:16 Shorts or multi-language versions without rebuilding compositions.

That is the job Explainimate is built for. The whiteboard animation and stickman explainer pages show the same engine in two common styles.

Can Claude + Remotion replace an explainer tool?

Sometimes, for a developer making a short branded clip: yes. For a teacher turning lesson notes into a chalkboard video every week: usually no. The bottleneck is not "can AI write JSX?" — it is script review, voice timing, readable labels and exporting without a render farm setup.

A useful rule:

  • If the failure mode is "the easing feels off," use Remotion.
  • If the failure mode is "the words are wrong or the diagram is confusing," use an explainer workflow that shows the script before the pictures.

What the explainer path costs

Remotion prices commercial rendering by company licence; Explainimate prices by the credits spent drawing. Checking the script, editing by hand and exporting are free on every account.

FAQ

What is Remotion used for?

Remotion is a React framework for programmatic video: motion graphics, product films, captions systems and automated personalized video. With agent skills, Claude Code can draft compositions you then refine in Remotion Studio.

Is Remotion free for commercial explainer videos?

Personal and some low-volume creator use can qualify for Remotion's free license. Rendering videos for customers, SaaS features or high volume generally needs a company / automators arrangement. Check Remotion's licensing docs for the current rules — they change by product line and version.

What is an AI explainer video maker?

Software that turns a prompt or script into a short narrated explainer. Explainimate's version draws each scene as vector graphics while the narrator speaks, after you approve the script.

Can I use Remotion and Explainimate together?

Yes. Many teams use Remotion for launch bumpers and brand kits, and an AI explainer for documentation, onboarding lessons and SEO/YouTube explainers. They answer different briefs.

I don't know React. Should I learn Remotion just to make explainers?

Only if you want motion design as a craft. If you mainly need clear teaching or product explainers, start with an AI explainer video maker and keep Remotion for when a developer joins the brief.

Does Explainimate embed or run Remotion?

No. Explainimate is its own hand-drawn explainer engine. This article compares two approaches people search for together; it is not a Remotion host or IDE.

Try the path that matches your brief

If your next video is "explain one idea clearly, with a pen and a voice," paste the topic or script above and approve the storyboard before anything is drawn. If it is a motion system in React, follow Remotion's coding-agent docs and keep the composition in git.
